Curved spoons
We are curved spoons. Sometimes referred to as slanted or biased spoons. Both of these terms seem slightly politically incorrect, so we refer to ourselves as curved. We are excellent at stirring the pot, literally. Our angled scoopy part is perfect for keeping food or ingredients from getting stuck in the corners of pots and pans.
On the left, is the maple spoon. I am made from the sapwood portion of maple lumber. The sapwood tends to be lighter in color than the heartwood.
On the right is the alder spoon. Alder wood is slightly “softer” than maple so may be more likely to show dents after the inevitable “whacking” on the rim of pots and pans. But I am still a solid utensil.

Curved spoon, hickory, right-handed, 12.5” long
I am a curved spoon. I am made of hickory. I tend to have a light, pleasant aroma and am heavy for my size. I am most commonly used for axe and hammer handles and sometimes baseball bats. I am very strong and durable and would probably win in a spoon-fight death match against any of the other spoons.

Curved Spoon, left handed
I am a left-handed spoon, also known as the Devil’s Spoon. Just kidding, there’s nothing devilish about me. Like most left handers, I was made by accident. Again, just kidding. But actually I was made by accident. I had my bowl scooped out on the wrong side of the blank (the rough outline of my final form) and before I knew it, I was left-handed.
My color varies from a cream to light blonde, all the way to greyish brown, depending on which cut of the tree my lumber is taken from. Heartwood will usually be darker, while the sapwood is almost always lighter.
On the right is my hickory version. I have a light, pleasant aroma and am very strong and durable with a vibrant grain and blonde to reddish hues.

I’m about to be born into a spoon.
Above is an example of a spoon blank. In this case a slab of maple is pieced out and the spoon outline is drawn. From here I will be cut down and shaved and sanded until I become the spooniest spoon I can be. My “handedness” will be determined by whichever side of the blank my bowl is dipped out on. If I’m to be a lefty, my bowl will be scooped out of the top side as seen in the picture. If I’m to be a righty, my bowl will be scooped out on the other.
